Local rights NGO invited at international forum
A local youthful human rights activist, Manuel Malamba, will be among 70 youth selected to attend the 9th annual international leadership training programme at University of Connecticut, USA this month.
Dubbed the global intergenerational forum, the programme is under the Unesco Institute for Comparative Human Rights whose chairperson Amii Omara-Otunnu has commended Malamba, who heads Human Rights Eye Foundation, for commitment to the cause of human rights.
“You along with 70 others were selected for your demonstration of engagement in human rights related work and your passion for making an important contribution to humanity through service. Your successful application was chosen from among over 600 applicants, representing more than 90 countries and all six continents,” said Omara-Otunnu.
Malamba, whose organisation has been sensitising people in Lirangwe, Blantyre on the effects of stigma on disabled children, said this is a rare opportunity to learn, network and get a chance to showcase work of the organisation and discuss problems that Malawian youth are facing.
“I am honoured to be granted such an opportunity and would like to encourage my fellow youth to get involved in human rights related work so that everyone should have a sense of responsibility,” he said in a statement.
He said the organisation’s vision is to have, not only a country where people know their right, but also one where people know both their rights and responsibilities.
